INTERVIEW WITH A CARTOONIST
CARTOONISTS LINKS

 I frequently get asked how
I produce my editorial cartoons.

So let's create a basic tribute style editorial cartoon.
We will use the subject of the
American Pop Culture director Bob Clarks' tragic accident
this toon is called "A Easter Story"

I always start out sketching my idea on an acid free
8 1/2" x 11" sheet of drawing paper. Using about a
8 1/4" x 8 1/4" area. I use Berol products.
Berol 3B pencils are my favorite at the moment,
you can use heavier 6B's to get darker lines.
But I don't like the excess product around on the paper.
After finishing sketching, if I am finishing the
cartoon manually, I always use india ink along with basic
finishing drawing accessories. I  usually always prefer
to use digital processes for the remaining work though.

After I get done scanning the sketch I get a roughed in digital cartoon as seen above left, I use 100% contrast to sharpen up the cartoon giving a crisp black outline. I will have a cartoon that is ready to be colorized digitally as seen to the immediate left. I will add captions or wording right after I am done using Arc Soft hardware to achieve a finished crisp colorized cartoon.I will finish the cleaning up process at this stage before I finish off the fine details. We are creating a tribute cartoon dealing with the subject of an individual passing. "A Easter Story", is a wordplay off of "A Christmas Story", Bob Clarks classic movie.

We must emphasize taste with this as it is a tribute to a great director of American Pop Culture, a respected entertainment individual. Cartooning is not an exact science, this cartoon we see here is the second attempt. The first sketch just didn't catch my eye so I started over at the drawing board to end up with a workable toon.

After cleaning up the panel I will letter the toon. Keep in mind readers must be able to read words. You should also try to minimize any wording. Along with a sympathy mention to family.

After manually drawing the finishing details of the
cartoon digitally which includes adding a border around the finished panel area. The last step is final colorizing the entire
cartoon. The finished cartoon which is seen at the
right is then sent off to various editors for  news
publications. Many cartoons are never seen by
the public because the creator, or the creator's
editors  just weren't satisfied with the first few
original concepts.

A majority of the time while I am cartooning
I will have about two or three sketches
for each seperate editorial cartoon. Then I
decide which direction to take that would
appeal to a wide audience.

Hopeful that it will entertain, and get a response from the
readers, and editors that publish this great art form.
"I'll see you all in the funnies."
Spread some laughter today.....
Toon In, and Toon On cartoon fans.....
